Strange Days... Indeed - #200

My Take On It
There is a new television commercial that is making its presence felt on the airwaves and it got me thinking. This particular commercial is for a new shaving cream and utilizes a bunch of very attractive ladies who are supposed to be aliens from another planet and they abduct a guy in order to treat him to this new experience, which they say is very pleasurable. Obviously, the sexual innuendo associated with being abducted by aliens is being used by the producers of the commercial to convince us poor people, who have not yet used their product, that it is out of this world and we're in for such a delightful experience, etc., etc. - ad nauseum. The truth of the matter, of course, is that anyone who has been abducted - read forcibly taken as opposed to willingly accompanying - and have told about being sexually manipulated by aliens do not think of their experience as being remotely delightful. In fact, many abductees report that the experience is quite painful and completely unwelcome. Now this would be nothing if it were the first instance of commercial producers using aliens, abductions, contact with aliens, and UFOs in commercials but it becomes something when you consider that it is simply one of an entire score of commercials that utilize items within ufology . UFOs and Aliens have helped sell an entire myriad of products ranging from automobiles and computers to peanut butter cups and the one thing that has become a common element within all of the commercials is that aliens are nice creatures or they are funny or they are cute or they are playful and of course, they can even be helpful to us. Now a certain amount of how commercial producers portray UFOs and alien creatures can be attributed to belief... if you don't believe in it, it's real easy to have some fun with it and subsequently give your audience a little giggle even as they decide they might want to try your product. Additionally, whoever has the product would not want to scare away the people using the product so, let's make the aliens and the flying saucers seem nice. The vast majority of reports that deal with any contact between humans and extraterrestrial life forms show at the very best, indifference to us as a species, almost as if we were simply lab animals and in some instances, the reports show the aliens as being hostile to us as a species. Now I'm not trying to say that all alien life forms are going to try and pull an Independence Day scenario on us, but the real evidence doesn't show them as coming here to show us how to avoid killing each other off either! Many years ago, there were tons of commercials on television and radio that touted all the nice things about smoking cigarettes. Nowadays, the facts are 'in' and cigarette commercials are no longer allowed because there is no doubt that cigarettes are bad for us. I don't believe that we will stop broadcasting commercials that use aliens or UFOs in the story just because we know that the visitors are not as benign or nice as commercials portray them, but I do hope that we'll get to know the full truth before we have to start putting warning labels on commercials with aliens or UFOS in them. But that's just my take on it..... |
